Local Health Officer
Every municipality in the State of Maine is required by law to employ a Local Health Officer (LHO), as well as establish a local Board of Health, of which the LHO is the head.  LHOs are also responsible for adjoining areas designated as unorganized.

An LHOs activities and duties include:
  • Health resource for the community
  • Enforce public health safety laws
  • Report communicable diseases
  • Investigate/Enforce complaints
  • Examine nature of public complaints
  • With consent, inspect and examine premises where filth and conditions pose a public health threat
  • Keep record of complaints, investigation and resolution
